December 2008

  • FRED KLEIST WASH. QUICK CHESS CHAMPION FOR 2008 – The Wash. Quick Chess Championship (G/30) was held at the Seattle Chess Club on 12/6. There were 13 players in all. The winners were: 1st Fred Kleist 5.0, $65.00, 2nd Casey Fleck 4.0, $60.00, 1st U2000 Bruce Gregg 3.0 $40.00, 1st U 1700 Darby Monahan 3.0, $40.00, 1st U1500 Chris Edwards 3.0 $40.00. TD Gary Dorfner.
  • BARTRON GOES 3-0 IN CHRISTMAS SWISS – The Christmas Swiss was held at the club on the first three Friday nights in December. There were 15 players in all. The winners were: 1st Paul Bartron 3.0, 2nd Drayton Harrison, Stephen Buck & Logan MacGregor 2.0 each. There was 1 upset, Steve Buck 1597 beat Mike Macgregor 2247 in R-2. TD Gary Dorfner. Drayton Harrison did R-3.
  • SCHILL WINS CHALLENGERS’ CUP and is SEEDED INTO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP – The Wash. Challengers’ Cup was held at the club on Dec. 27-28. It was to have been played on Dec. 20-21 but had to be rescheduled because of the weather. Only 10 players showed up to compete for the right to play in the state championship. The winners were: 1st-2nd Bill Schill & Mike MacGregor, 3.0 points, $105.00 each. (Schill & MacGregor played a G/15 playoff game to decide who would be seeded into the championship. It was won by Bill Schill.) 1st U2000 Chris Johnson & Samir Sen 2.0 $37.50 each, 1st U1400 Roland Feng 1.0 $75.00. TD Gary Dorfner.

October-November 2008

  • BARTRON SWEEPS THE P.C. QUICK CHAMPIONSHIP – The Pierce County Quick Chess Championship was held at the club on Friday night 11/21. There were 7 players in all. The winners were: 1st Paul Bartron 4.0, 2nd Stephen Buck & Drayton Harrison 3.0 each. TD Drayton Harrison.
  • The TCC Quick Chess G/30 Championship was held at the club on Nov. 11th. There were 6 players in all. The winners were; 1st Mike MacGregor 5.0, 2nd Stephen Buck & Peter Marriott 3.5 each.
  • TCC Economy #3 was held on Nov. 15th. It was to have been a 2 day event but as there were only 6 players at the start (1 entered later for a total of 7), the format was changed to a one day. The winners were: 1st Nickola Pazderic, 2nd Fred Kleist & Bill Rogers.

SCHOLASTIC REPORT

  • The Bryant Fall Classic was held at Bryant Elementary School. There were 297 players In all, 33 in the K section, 1st-3rd 157 & 4-6 107. The winners were: In the K Section 1st Wesley Ho 5.0, 2nd Matt Bennani & Devin Golias 4.0 each, 1st-3rd 1st Noah Fields, Chandler Moy, Coley Fannin, Kyle Haining & Victor Wu 5.0 each, 4-6 1st Zamir Birnbach & Wesley Yu 5.0 each. All received trophies.

  • 2008 Mini Team High School Section; 1st Lakeside (A) 13, 2nd Garfield 12, 3rd Skyline 11 4th Seattle Prep (A) 9.5 There were 25 teams of 3 players in all Jr. High/Middle School 1st Woodward (A) 13.5, 2nd Pine Lake (A) 9.5, 3rd McClure 7, 4th Woodward (B) There were 6 teams of 3 players in all.

July-September 2008

  • The Puget Sound Open was held at the club in July. There Were 4 players in all and it was run as a quad. The winners were: 1st Drayton Harrison and Logan MacGregor, 2 points each. There was no prize fund as all 4 players paid the economy entry fee.

  • The Fire Cracker Swiss was held on the last 3 Friday nights of July. There 12 players in all. The winners were: 1st Paul Bartron, Bryan Black, Drayton Harrison, Larry Anderson and Jeff Anderson, $3.60 each, 1st Bottom Half Dan Reisinger and Peter Marriott, $9.00 each.

  • The Pierce County Class Championship was held on Aug. 2nd. There were 4 players in all and it was run as a quad. The winner was Paul Bartron, $25.00.

  • The Summer Open was held on Aug. 24-25. There were 6 players In all. The winner was Paul Bartron, $25.00.

  • The TCC Quick Quads were held on Sept. 5th. There were 12 players In all. The winners were: Quad #1 Paul Bartron, Quad #2 Peter Marriott, Quad #3 Treavor Sands.

  • The TCC Economy #2 was held on 9/6. There were 6 players in all. The winners were: 1st Paul Bartron, 2nd Dennis Ambler & Stephen Buck. TD for all of these events: Gary Dorfner.

  • The TCC had its booth at the Puyallup Fair once again for the 25th year in a row. Chairman Gary Dorfner would like to Thank Bill Rogers, Treavor Sands, Tracy Bingham, Mike MacGregor, Paul and Vivi Bartron, Dan Reisinger and Elladell Morris and her son Brandon for volunteering to help man the booth this year.

  • The TCC Club Championship started on Friday night, Sept. 19th. 12 players showed up to play. A few more are expected to show up next Friday night. More on this event later.

April-June 2008

  • The Daffodil Open was held at the club in April. There were 19 entries in all. The winners were: 1st Mike MacGregor $106.00, 1st G-1 Paul Bartron, Howard Chen, Mark Saarenas & Allen Smith $16.00 each. G-2 Jeff Lowther $60.00, G-3 Alexandra Botez $55.00.

  • The Pierce County Championship was held at the club on 5 Friday nights in April. There were 18 players in all. The winners were: 1st (P.C. Champion for 2008) Mike MacGregor & Nhon Do $22.50 each. (A playoff match will be held to determine who gets the title) 1st Class A Allen Smith $15.00, 1st Class B Larry Anderson, 1st Class C Logan MacGregor, 1st Class D Josh Putnam & 1st Class E Peter Marritt. Class B,C,D & E winners each received a trophy.

  • The Pierce County Open was held at the club in May. There were 10 players in all. The winners were: 1st overall—1st G-1 Paul Bartron & Howard Chen $36.00 each, 1st G-2 Jaun LeRoux $25.00.

  • The Tacoma City Championship was held at the club on 5 Friday nights in June. There were 13 players in all. The winners were: 1st (Tacoma City Champion for 2008 Paul Bartron $25.00, 1st U2000 Drayton Harrison & Larry Anderson $10.00 each, 1st U1400 Bill Rogers $20.00.

  • The 45th Evergreen Empire Open was held at the club in June. There were 10 players in all. The winners were: 1st Overall—G-1 Paul Bartron & Michael Wang $57.00 each, 1st G-2 Johnny Recinos & Ian McPherson $10.00 each. TD for all of the above events: Gary Dorfner.

With gas prices going higher & higher I suggest that you car pool with a group of people or take the bus over to the Tacoma Dome Transit Station & then walk 2 blocks to the club.

January-March 2008

  • The Tacoma Chess Club Quick G/10 tournament was held at the club on January 11th. There were eight players in all. The winners were: Top Half 1st Nhon Do, Paul Bartron and Drayton Harrison 4 points each, Bottom Half 1st Stephen Buck 3, 2nd Eric Holcomb 2.

  • The President’s Congress was held at on Jan. 26-27, there were 14 players in all. The winners were: 1st Paul Bartron $73.00, Group #1 Mike MacGregor $44.00, Group #2 Jeff Lowther $41.00, Group #3 David Meliti & Logan Macgregor $18.50 each.

  • The Washington WoodPushers Under 1800 was held on Feb. 9-10. There were only 6 players. The winners were: 1st Eric Holcomb $35.00, 1st Group #1 Anthony Whitt $23.00, 1st Group #2 August Piper $22.00.

  • The 2008 Air Force Tournament was held at McChord Air Force Base. There were 8 players in all. The winners were: 1st Steven Herbert, 2nd Dale Bateman, and 3rd Robert Karch. There were only 2 kids and they played a best 2 out of 3 match. Alex Stephens won the match 2-1. The winners all received trophies.

  • The 2008 Pierce County League was held on the five Friday nights In February. There were 6 teams of 3 players in all. The Drunken Knights; B-1 Drayton Harrison, B-2 Eric Wade, B-3 Alex Nikolskyy and the Warriors B-1 Paul Bartron, B-2 Eric Holcomb B-3 Gary Dorfner tied for 1st. There will be a playoff match for the league championship. Top boards were B-1 Paul Bartron and Mike MacGregor. They will play a blitz match to see who gets the plaque, B-2 Eric Holcomb, B-3 Connie Etingher. TD for all of the above events: Gary Dorfner.

  • On the last Friday in January, the TCC annual membership meeting was held. The following were elected officers for 2008: President - Allen Smith; Vice President - Steve Buck; Secretary - Paul Bartron; Treasurer - Mike MacGregor; Tournament Director - Gary Dorfner; Publicity Director - David Wight; and Sergeant At Arms - Nhon Do.

  • The Tacoma CC vs. Seattle CC Match was held at the TCC on Saturday, March 1st. There were 7 boards. The result was Seattle CC 6 & Tacoma CC 1. There will be a rematch at the SCC later this year. We hope to make this a yearly event between the two clubs. Fred Kleist and Gary Dorfner were the Organizers and Tournament Directors.
