Showing the geographic diversity of chess in Washington, two major events were held the first weekend of October on opposite sides of the state.
Oyster Bay Inn Classic, Bremerton, WA (Oct. 4-5, 2014)
16 players competed in two sections. Michael MacGregor won the Open section with 3.5 of 4 points, regaining a 2200+ rating (2202), while Zhili Liu won the Regular section with a perfect 4.0 score, raising his provisional rating to 1866. Eastern Washington Open (Oct. 4-5, 2014)
Sponsored by the Spokane Chess Club, this long-running annual event drew 36 players in one section this year. The winner was Michael Cambareri with a perfect 5.0, raising his rating to 2052. USCF crosstable link.
